Unless I'm looking back at the past with too much nostalgia through a rose colored mask, gear Failure Points in the '60's and '70's was a non issue. Of course "back then" gear wasn't manufactured with built in obsolescence like it is now, i.e. fins. But even with today's mail order crap, if it's given a lot of TLC shouldn't that greatly lower the chances of failure? And doesn't today's basic courses teach "what if" scenarios for potential gear failure?
