As I remember, the issue was also largely a psychological one. The son had been increasingly reckless & irresponsible. The father and son had a history of egging each other on, and I believe the father had spent some time trying to resue his son from the sub, hence the panic. Extra bottles had been salted along the top of the sub, but they couldn't find them.
