Why "with the edge of your beam"?

I mean, the edge of your beam in the lobster's eye is simply a dimmer light source that the center of your beam would be for him. He does not see the beam as you do. So, why just the edge?

The way I do it is, once I spot the bug, I approach him while shining at him as little as possible, and once I am within grabbing distance, I keep him in the dark for a few seconds and then give him full candlepower and pin him immediately after that.
