If you are on the West Side of LA, I would highly recommend Scubahaus at 26th and Wilshire. John Corso and Bob Roth who teach there are both PADI and IANTD instructors who will make you a significantly better diver.
In Orange County, Liburdi's Scuba in Irvine is also a good shop. Bryan Weerheim and Eric Rose are two instructors there who are very good.
