DIR question

When I first began diving, my gear included a wrist-mount compass, capillary depth gauge and U/W watch. After a few annoying entanglements and a broken buckle during a dive, I bought a three gauge console. I've read many of the comments by DIR proponents that divers who use a console are idiots. My question is, how is a properly attached console any less streamlined than wristmount gauges? I'm not talking about dangling consoles, either.
