East coast diving isn't just Florida (although Floridians and other warm water wussie Easterners might think it is). There is diving all the way up the coast right to the tip of Maine (super diving there). Although there is little shore diving from Florida to New York, once you hit New England you are in shore diving heaven, especially from Rhode Island northward. The East coast dive culture is probably split in to three groups; the warm water group in Florida (with its split off cave divers); the wreck divers from North Carolina to New York (the New Jersey divers are a subgroup unto themselves) and finally the New England cold water diver. An aside here, the oldest dive club in the US is purported to be the North Shore Frogmen operating out of the Boston, Massachusetts area. The New England diver has been shore diving for years, especially hunting for "real" lobster, the ones that fight back.
