Yeah...I agree with your last point about DIR superceding all...for instance I have this "beach dive" that is an hour hike so I don't take all my normal gear with me because I can't carry it all so I use some rocks as weights and a surfing wetsuit even though I get a little colder. What's wrong with that? If I had to haul all my gear there I would never go diving! Thank god diving in Cali is not like diving with Germans. I went diving with some Germans this summer in Greece. They wouldn't let me stray five feet from my buddy let alone descend to check some cool shit out even though I had a computer and 1000+ logged dives. After two dives with them I got a refund on my 10 pre-paid dives and was happy to return to my freestyle California beach diving with $2 airfills and lot's of space! Amen!
