Frank;

Don't despair. Instead of focussing on the gear, focus on the philosophy and integrate the gear incrementally. For example, uncluttering, breathing the long hose, using a back plate and wings is far less expensive than 2 bills. There is no DIR regulator, per se, just some which, because of design, are viewed as unacceptable. For example, I still use my Odin firsts but have changed the Jetstream seconds for old G250's which I bought off the Reef Seekers trade in desk. Given your self-imposed depth limit and no-deco style diving, forget the trimix cert and stick to nitrox. At some point you may want to get the additional training, but making the few changes mentioned should make your diving a lot more enjoyable without a big outlay.

The toughest part is finding the people of like mind and skills. They do exist, even in SoCal, however, and most of us love diving wrecks.
