Scuba Diver Dies Off Mission Beach
Second Diver To Drown In Last 10 Days
SAN DIEGO, Updated 6:59 p.m. PST January 7, 2001 -- Authorities are trying to determine what caused the death of an experienced scuba diver off Mission Bay Sunday afternoon.

Rescuers found Mia Tegner, 53, unconscious at a depth of about 85 feet near the sunken ship El Rey, 10News reports.

Tegner -- who surfaced with fellow divers after exploring the ship -- reportedly went back down alone because she needed additional time underwater to avoid decompression sickness.

According to 10News, the fatal dive was Tegner's second dive of the day. She reportedly explored the Yukon, another sunken battleship, earlier Sunday.

Lifeguards say that Tegner -- a marine biologist at Scripps Institute in La Jolla -- was an "expert" diver and had made more than 3,000 dives.

Tegner lived in University City and was well-known in the local diving community, 10News reports.

The diver's death comes a week after another diver died while exploring the Yukon, a sunken Canadian destroyer that now serves as an articifical reef and diving attraction.

Lifeguards found Monica Vilca, 41, near the ship with a full tank of air on Dec. 29. They said that Vilca wandered off from the other divers.

Lifeguards said that they've seen quite a bit of interest in the Yukon, but until recently, haven't had a lot of problems.

The Yukon is considered an advanced diving destination.
