The lesson here may be a simple one: Good divers make bad decisions, and bad decisions can get ANY diver in trouble.
I don't care if you're DIR, non-DIR, King of the Strokes, or whatever, but IMHO the most important piece of equipment you're going to take with you on any dive is your brain.
