I started using nitrox when I lived in South Florida. It is much more common there than in CA. Nitrox use does seem to be picking up in my area (North Coast). I base that statement on the increased demand for nitrox fills and certifications at the shop where I DM in Rohnert Park (about 50 miles north of S.F.). I know that Monterey Bay Dive Center also has nitrox available.

I think that nitrox caught on faster in Florida because the conditions there were so favorable for it. There is usually a hard bottom, so MOD's are not a problem, and the warm water let's one take advantage of extended bottom times. I have to drive a lot farther to and from dive sites in CA, so I consider less N in my system and the ability to function post-dive with out an obilgatory nap to be a great plus. The feel-good aspects of geezer gas has not been proven, but I like it even if it is imaginary!
