One can use tables fairly easily when you know before you begin the dive what depth you plan on diving at. This is easy for a wreck dive where you know what depth you will be at before you start the dive.
On many island dives here in California one does not always know what depth you will be at. This is especially true when lobster hunting. Depending on terrain, and where you find game you may spend most of your dive deep, or in 6 ft. of water. Many times you do not know where the game is until you look. This can involve several large depth changes during the dive. For dives like this, where the pre dive profile is not known, a dive computer is invaluable.
