You are right, of course for rec diving here in California where we bounce all over the place. I guess I was not clear.

What I meant to say is that just like I know how to use a compass and a watch, I can fully use the tables. But this does not stop me from using the GPS or the dive computer.

As far as doing multilevel NDLs on the fly, I have done it on wall dives. PLAN:Descend to 85 feet and poke around for a maximum of X minutes, ascend to 35 until NDL or OOA. If the interesting stuff is at 55 instead of a "planned" 35, then a recalc is a good idea. I like PADI's RDP Wheel for this. Quick and easy. That is what I meant.
