I've not seen it come out of the sand but I have been on a boat and seen if upwell out of the water column. It comes in small drops and rises very slowly. If the viz is good it looks like little pearls in the water column. When it breaks the surface, you see the rainbow-like sheen for less than 30 seconds before it dissipates.
