Doesn't DIR preach to prevent a problem before it happens rather than to

provide a way to solve it once it happened?

Since I used one of those plugs on my non-DIR octo, I have no more sand in the reg. Before, I did after each beach dive. I would want my back up to function without having to clean it first underwater, after I just donated my primary to an OOA diver, thank you very much.

OK, sand in the reg has not yet rendered it useless, but don't you think it would be DIR to prevent sand to get in there in the first place? Maybe DIR needs to allow for local adjustments.

No matter what, my main point is not to debate DIR but to ask how I can keep the back up sealed but still have it readily available as the DIR way (that I appreciate) suggests.
