Diving is expensive. There's no getting around that, even
in Monterey where we can shore dive. If you're already
in a position where you need to save $100 on instruction,
you will probably not be diving enough right away to
make it worth doing at this time.
In theory I've had a full gear set for a few years. Yet
somehow last year (according to quicken) I still spend
over $300/month in diving.
A bad course leaves you needed a good experienced buddy
or to take the Advanced class before you're reasonably safe
in Northern Cal waters. What you probably want is the
longest course you can find, one that has 2 weekends of
checkouts.
