I have no expertise in judging either tie wraps or bungee cords lasting longer, but I do know that I am using a bungee lanyard on my dive light for over 9 years now (3 mm thin, rubber inside, wrapped with (I assume) nylon outside). The lanyard is still like new. Stretches like new, strong like new. I fully trust it to securely carry and my $500 dive light that weighs over 6 lbs topside and almost 2.5 underwater.
So much for rotting shock cords. I'll show you next time I see you.
