No shit! It took a lot of soul searching for me to come to my current position of support for this legislation. I lived in Santa Barbara for 20 years and know the oil consortiums all to well. Their recent price gouging from last spring/summer still has me offended.
What brought me over to supporting their legislation, was the realization that this really could be a "win-win" bill that stands to benefit a lot of California sportsmen. Although the oil companies stand to save substantial millions, I also believe that before, and if this bill passes, the environmental lobby will require a much larger contribution from them. I'm really more concerned that the politicians will attempt to circumvent the intent of the Marine Preservation Endowment Fund established by this legislation, and use the funds elsewhere. Hopefully the bill's language will be restrictive and focused.
