The guy at the rigs had buddies with him and when he needed to return to the boat, they followed him despite his protests up to 40 feet and watched him until he surfaced. Another guy had a heart attack at the swimstep with others in the water and the DM a few feet away. They may not have been in "optimal" dive teams, but they were definately not solo diving. A very small minority of divers feel that anyone not in an optimal dive team is solo, but the reality is that most people don't dive that way and would never consider themselves solo divers.
