It is true that most of the knowledge I have comes from experience I learned personally or sought out from more experienced divers I met.
However, my initial LA County SCUBA training was far more extensive than any 2 or 3 courses that other agencies offer. The high attrition rate in my LA County class was very effective at weeding out those people who had no business in the water. Unfortunately today's for profit agencies are more interested in getting people certified and into more classes. It seems to me their objective is to make money, not turn out good divers.
