Well, aside from the DIR folks, it seems that everyone likes a computer. We're all still waiting to see how to do manual deco calculations better than a computer.
I will assume that your son's computer failure in no way put him at risk of DCS.

PS. For strictly sport diving, may I recommend not going to 160 feet, even on your desk.
