Doppler usage is OK for testing deco schedules. Much less useful in predicting specific on set of DCI.
Huntleigh makes a handheld for $600 or so. Techno Scientific of Canada makes the one they use at DAN and Catalina for $2500 or so + $1000 for a probe. The Huntleigh works pretty well on the subclavian site, but is not precise enough for clinical work on the precordial site. The Techno is designed specifically to detect venous gas bubbles and works well in both locations.
If you're like me, simply looking to keep track of the efficacy of various deco schedules and gas combinations at eliminating post dive venous gas bubbles, the Huntleigh will do. If you're looking to do anything like science, the Techno is better.
Before investing, read about Doppler usage in diving in Ray Nishi's chapter in Bennet and Elliot's The Physiology and Medicine of Diving or in Bennet's Diving Medicine-both available through DAN.
