My only (to date!) primary free flow happened while diving a wreck in Newfoundland: 80 fsw, 38 degrees Fahrenheit. Pilot error 'cause I didn't prep the primary for cold water. However, my 30 cu ft pony reg was prepped and enabled me to ascend normally. IMHO, a 30 cu ft pony is the only way to "ride" a single tank: two separate air sources. The DIR setup is sound, but should one of the regs freeflow you'd be freeflowing and breathing out of the same tank, and if the freeflowing reg emptied the tank before you reached the surface...:(
