"It was a brisk 50 degrees." That sounds practically balmy to me. You got cold, while swimming? Get thee a dry suit!

I did an interesting experiment on a night dive at Santa Rosa last month. I was following fish with my light (mostly various rock fish). They kept scattering when I hit them with my primary light. I then put my primary to my chest and put my LED light on them. The fish stopped swimming and acted like they were back in the dark. I repeated this test dozens of times, sometimes using the LED first. Every time, the fish were spooked by my primary incandesent light, but calm when I used only my LED. I did not have a chance to try this on bugs, but I think it would be worth testing.
