"I just wonder why all the DIR guys use their own names on here while only a portion of its major
detractors do."

i don't know if i would be one of those so-called
detractors of 'dir', but the reason i use a monikor
instead of my real name is two-fold:

**i think it's fun to use a cute nickname--other
people have nicknames in real life, why not on
the net? my 'taz' nickname has actually ended up
substituting my real name at times when i've gotten
together in real life w/divers from all over.

**when i started posting on the internet several
years ago, i was paranoid about other people on
the net and i decided from the very beginning
to not use my real name in my e-mail addy.

there are reasons why some people choose not
to use their real names on the net, sometimes
it's b/c they may get into trouble w/their
employers, etc, etc. as for your comparison
w/'dir' vs others on this board...perhaps other
folks are just more creative and fun than
the 'dir' folks when it comes to names???????

< : )

anyway, imho, i don't think people should get
sooooo hung up on the usage of names, just as
long as the e-mail addy is good (...even then
some choose not to post it, again citing issues
w/their employers). and in the case of one
person who DOES use his real name (1st initial
and last name), some people thought THAT was
an anonymous monikor when in fact it was his
real name. goes to show you, i suppose.

instead of focussing on what names we like to
call ourselves, how about if we just stick to
the issues...?...(just a thought).

= : )
