Talking about culture, the Shining was a Stephen King novel, and a *really* intense one. Kubrick made it into a film. At least Sir Stan knew how to catch you, keep you, and then pummel you mercilessly.

What caught me about this post was a conversation I had with a friend the last time we were sitting out a surface interval on his itty bitty inflatable. He was talking about all the great books he's been reading at work (he travels a lot). Later on, I found out that he's been listening to "books on tape" (which my wife and I both do, since we commute). But he kept using the word "read" like he was actually reading the book. That started the whole "nobody reads anymore" "movie vs. book" discussion. You know, I think, given enough time, the two of us could manage to come up with solutions to all the worlds problems. It's amazing what you think of trying to nap while balanced on the tube of an inflatable.

--btw, there's a special edition DVD of The Shining out. I highly recommend it.
