"What I think we are seeing is frightening situation where the cave diving community see themselves as the elite of scuba divers."

wayne, the way i see it, the 'dir' crowd IS indeed
an elite group, but there's nothing wrong w/that.
the members of that group should be commended for
setting up a standard protocol for the type of
diving that they do. but as my hubby mentioned
recently, making everyone be part of an elite group, is like forcing every single police officer in the nation to become 'swat' team trained. that's nice, but:

a. it's not feasible
and
b. for the most part, it's not even necessary.

there is a time and place for certain elitist practices, but that doesn't mean all the time and
in every place. i think that is what is difficult
for some in the 'dir' group to understand.

"Unfortunately, many fear the ridicule that they will incur if they say their mind."

WHY???!!! a simple message to others out there:

don't be afraid to speak/write!! so, what if someone will end up calling you names--that hasn't
stopped many of us from posting. name-calling
results in absolutely nothing and no one should
be "afraid" of it. now, i certainly wouldn't want
to dive w/some folks, especially johnny-boy who
has on this board publicly suggested to mhk to
slit my throat underwater (yes, i can find the post as long it's still archived). actions are
different from name-calling: name-calling is harmless.

no one should be afraid to speak/write on this board.
