As far as their charging and veering manuever, this is very common. Whenever you find a group of sea lions, there will always be one that is the "watchdog" of the group. Look around at all of them and you will find one that never takes his eyes off you. When he feels the time is right, he charges full speed at your face and at the last minute, blows bubbles, shows his large teeth and veers away. If you swim towards him, the entire group will leave. If you swim away, you may be chased down and harrassed. If you hold your ground, they will not perceive you as a threat and will include you in their sea lion games.
