I suspect the recent storms and may have broken up the kelp and temporarily chased your Moray friend away, or perhaps it was
the need to breed.
I do not know the habits of Morays well, but they do come out of their holes to feed and breed, and may have moved to deeper
water to get out of the storm surge.
Abalone also move, but usually not far.
I would go back to the cove again in a few months and see of your Moray friend has returned.
