Because of my inherent bouyancy I never doubted for a moment that I could surface comfortably in the even I either lost or dropped my weight belt.

I'm not worried about you surfacing without a weightbelt, I'm worried about surfacing without an inflation source. Understanding that you would of course ditch the belt in an emergency, the question becomes does double steel tanks preclude you from surfacing, due to there inherintely negative bouyancy charateristics, should your baldder fail, or you lp hose burst???
That's the issue, not the weightbelt..
