I think a lot of the pre-dive planning is a direct result of the fatalities of the past. When we dive we put ourselves into a foreign environment that we were not meant to be in, and as such we need to compensate.
Accident analysis is probably the most under utilized source we have in diving.
So I'm sure that you completed many wonderful dives in the 70's, and I hope you continue to enjoy diving, but given what we've learned from the 70's to today why not look at the mistakes of other's and see what we can learn from them????
Advances in technology are providing all sorts of new opportunities:
Better gear;
exotic mixes;
more sufficent thermal protection
just to name a few. It seems to me that there is a wealth of history that we can learn from so we try to do it.
Some agree with us and some don't...
