After many years of exclusively spearfishing, this year I started line fishing in the kelp paddies off my favorite beach from my kayak. I didn't remember there was a line fishing bycatch but there is for every angler and it is unavoidable. I was sadened by all the small fish that died as a result of swallowed hooks and other injuries incurred during the hook and fight. Also, I was told by a biologist that the nervouse system of a typical fish is not developed enough for them to feel pain like we feel pain. All that writing on the deck might be electrical signals winding their way out of the body of the fish? I have dispatched many a large fish in the forehead then placed the stringer through the eyes only to have them writhing out of water for a good 45 minutes more. The stringer through the eyes should destroy the brain.
