DIR as I understand it doesn't advocate complete blind reliance on your buddy. What it does advocate is self reliance within a buddy system. Everyone is responsible for their own safety, but at the same time you have a responsibility to be a safe dive buddy and to be available and ready to act if needed. As far as redundant air supply goes, DIR advocates that your buddy carries your redundant air supply just by being there.
