Follow-up to looking for LA Diveshops question

Wayne, Raiderkarl, Kelphead, Jason, thanks for all of the suggestions. Can you recommend any specific dive shops? I've researched online, and those up in Oxnard/Ventura seem to be cheaper. Does anyone have any experience with them? Lastly, how about an AVERAGE start-up cost (lessons/equipment)? Again, thanks for all of the help. I want to educate myself as much as possible before making a decision.
