First of all, I never said, nor do I think, that taking a redundant air source (a pony bottle for instance)with you is bad or wrong. Just not necessary. I think if you observe the rule of thirds (If you don't know what this is, I suggest you refer to the archives since I think this has been explained by others a lot better than I could), dive with a safe and reliable buddy that you've established an OOA proceedure with, and have good situational awareness - then a pony bottle for the average recreational dive becomes redundant.

I personally don't like the idea of a pony bottle for several reasons. I think it might lull me into a false sense of security, it's more gear to buy and maintain, and I don't want more stuff strapped to back.
