The key to the whole thing is a balnced rig and the ability to surface. Next time you are at 100'+ with a buddy try surfacing absent the use of a bc while using a wetsuit, see if you can do it under controlled circumstances...
See how hard you need to work..
See how easily you can get a C02 builup and then ask yourself the following questions...
1) What did I gain by using a St tank???
2) Could I achieve the same benefit using an AL?
3) Is my life worth risking it???
4) Why increase the risk???
Solve the problem before you get in the water don't ignore it and hope you can deal with it when you have no bouyance, when you are plummeting and panicing..
Balance the rig and enjoy the dive...
