my dive club is debating this same issue also, and we have also narrowed it down to 3 things: the beginning of O2 toxicity onset, extended N2 narcosis leading to blackout, and CO2 buildup. We are all on the same page.
You have made the strongest arguments for CO2 build up that I have heard. On my next deep air dive, I will try breathing deeper. I may simply not have noticed that I was breathing shallow and infrequent. I may have been TOO RELAXED. Maybe I should have breathed deeper and harder. Thanks for the input.
