Find a local dive shop and go in. They might have a club and it woudl be populated with divers who live near you and would probably car pool.
While you are there, pick up a copy of California Diving News. It's free and very informative. And you need to go back everymonth and get the new issue! In it you will learn about dive spots, and all manner of interesting stuff. In the back of them publication is a list of clubs and a dive buddy section.
