I'm just back from Saint Martin where I passed my PADI open water certificate.
I stayed at Anse Marcel (It is considered one of the best spots of the Island) that is quite secluded and very safe. The beach is very nice and perfect for kids.In Anse Marcel there is a very good diving center called Scuba Fun (www.scubafun.com).
They offer hotel-dive packages that I think are quite good deals. The diving is Saint Martin offers a lot of variety and if you like wrecks this is the place to go! Anyway since I am a beginner in scubadiving I cannot tell you how it is in comparison to other caribbean destinations.

PS: just a word about the strong comment of Bentman about the fact that people in Martinique do not like Americans.... I can assure you that they are also very rude to french (mainland) people and this is why more and more french tourists go to Saint Martin where you will find more people speaking english than french and where US dollars are accepted everywhere.
