The San Diego Council of Divers and the San Diego City Lifeguard Service are proud to present the Rocks, Rips and Reefs program (3R's) for 2001. 3R's is an in-water education and site orientation program for divers and snorkelers. After a quick briefing on the interaction of surf, swell, and tides on underwater rocks and reefs, participants enter the water and tour popular dive sites with local lifeguards.
Participants learn how to:
• Identify underwater rocks and reefs by observing water movement and surf
• Take advantage of the ocean's natural wave motion
• Spot safe places to enter and exit
• Avoid places hazardous to divers and snorkelers
• Encounter rip and longshore currents
• Use tides to plan dives
Participants wear their normal wetsuit, mask, fins, and snorkel, but no more than HALF of their normal diving weights. Regulators, BC's, and tanks are not used during the program.
SCUBA certification is not required! Snorkelers welcome! 3R's is a great way for newer divers to learn more about the ocean and for experienced divers to explore new dive sites.
Register on site Saturday at 8:00 am, then suit up. Briefing at 8:15 am, in the water PROMPTLY at 8:30 am. Sessions end about 10:00 am. All diving is subject to weather and surf.
