I've not tried that. I have the attached hood, and the only thing I had to do was punch a couple of holes in the top to release trapped bubbles.
I've never tried diving with a vest, though. But I've never noticed any real difficulty in turning my head. But I regularly have to do neck R&M excercises (due to a drunk driver 5 years ago), so I guess I probably have a bit stronger neck muscles :-)
I don't normally get cold, so I haven't bothered with a vest. What kind of vest do you use, and what about it makes the hood less restrictive?
