but still on the topic of sharks, i don't know why
i had that particular dream when i did. i don't
think i felt stressed out about anything in particular,
but, then again, dreams are weird to begin with.

what scares me about encountering sharks is not
what do i do if i come up to it, but what do i
do if it comes up to me and doesn't leave me
alone. of course, i'd like to think i'm not
that stupid to harass a large animal (when seeing
a medium to large sized dog on the street, i choose
to cross the street); but what does one do when
the large animal takes an interest in you! kinda
like your friend's encounter that night.

= : )

(sheesh!! and at night, too!!)

i actually LOVE horned sharks. i saw them
quite a bit during my first year of diving off
catalina, and i would even take the initiative
to shine my little day light in all the holes
to try and find them--FUN!!! sometimes i'd find
2 under one rock!! i've even petted a baby horn
shark that was, for some reason, right there out
in the open on some 'grass' durind the day.
really cute things.

one year ago now, i was diving w/marta off the
'great escape' to test out the 'halcyon' rigs
and on the 1st dive that day, we swam over
what looked to me like a dead shark stuck vertically
in between a couple of rocks. i saw it, swam
over to it, thought very sad about it, and tried
to pull it out. it was whitish in color, and
looked shrivelled (like the skin on your fingertips
when they've been in water too long). i saw its
eyes, and upon my touching it and trying to pull
it out, it did not make a move.

back on the boat, i mention my experience to
someone else and he responded with: "oh, yeah,
that's probably a live swell shark. they do that,
get themselves swollen in between rocks." i kept
telling him that i really thought it was dead
and he just responded that it most probably wasn't.

well, if that's true, then i was pretty lucky
it didn't decide to defend itself against me, huh?

= : )

ultimately, it's just the psychology of it all:
i'm scared of touching a moray eel b/c of its pesky
open mouth showing sharp teeth, but i hear they
can be quite friendly.

as for the movie 'jaws', as a kid, i couldn't
even swim to the deep end of a backyard pool
at night, i was terrified. i could just imagine
a shark fin coming out of the deep end w/all
the pool lights on at night. sheesh!! *rolling of the eyes*
