just fyi, the farallone isles are right off
san francisco, much more north than monterey,
and these isles are termed the feeding grounds
for the great white: lots of sea lions and
elephant seals. we think we have a lot of seals
and sea lions down here, but apparently they
are even more numerous up there.
monterey waters can dip down to the mid to low 40's
(when i dove monterey two years ago, water at
depth was 45F; last year it was warmer at 55F).
i can only imagine that even further north by
the farallone isles the water temps would be
the same if not cooler.
surfers get bitten/attacked quite often up there;
whereas down here (i live in huntington beach),
i've never even heard of a sighting of a great white
off our ~10 mile stretch of beach, let alone an attack
in the 6.5 years that we've lived here.
the first known windsurfer attack by a great white
was documented up north off the san fran region.
when norcalians migrate down here, they are relieved
to learn that great white sightings and encounters
are much more rare than up north, in colder waters.
again, i'm just providing this for your info.
best wishes.
