If you donate your long hose to your OOA buddy, and find that your necklaced backup reg is not working, you still have your inflater, which as you know when both buttons are pushed, you can breathe from just like a reg. (Prior training recommended!) That is also why the inflater hose comes from the same post as the long hose, so if your left valve rolls off from repeated contact with a ceiling of sorts, you can breathe the third reg until you turn on the left post...about all of 10 seconds max. Of course, I only dive doubles for both cave and the pacific, but the theory works on singles too.
