Why waste gas testing regs that are known good?

I know that the spg reads zero before the dive, but I do not regularly test the reading when the 1st stage fails to deliver air to the second stage. Tell you what I do do. I always suck in hard for a couple of deep breaths while monitoring the SPG before I enter the water! I wanna know there are no restrictions (like a valve not really fully opened) before get all wet and drowny. Oh yea I also breath off the "other" reg and make sure it works in case a passing diver is OOA and yoinks my priamry.
