Even though the numbers reflect a small percentage of the total take, that does not tell
the real story. Every mature fish is potential brood stock. Many areas are depleted to
the point where every fish of breeding age is an important asset to the entire population of that specie.
Spear fishermen generally target the biggest fish with the greatest brood potential. They may not take the most, but they do take the best.
