I agree... There is never a good reason to use independant doubles in the open ocean...
The European's tend to do this slightly more often and it makes no sense.. You are forced to switch regs, monitor air supply more often and calculating 1/3 with 2 sets of tanks is dumb..
Generally, absent a side mounted cave situation, isolators are by far the only way to do this...
