"So my question is, has anybody ever really needed a line cutter or knife because of entanglement with fishing line or is it really a non-issue"

If you do get tangled you are better off with a line-cutter "they say". Makes sense because most of the fishing line has steel leaders which most knifes won't even scratch. I have this cutter that I purchased at Home Depot that is small and designed to cut steel it will cut through paper clips like nothing. It has SS blades and plastic handles, it serves as a dual purpose cutting tool around the house also. I carry this in one of those Zeagle pouches that loop through the weight strap along with my spare mask, small light, small lift bag and some straping, backup timer(my old computer).
