Chris you have hit a point perfectly that total buoyancy is the true issue. We who teach the DIR principles call it a balanced configuration.
Your comment about the DIR fanatics insistence of using a heavy stainless steel plate shows to me that you have little clue as to what the DIR system is all about. Therefore the simple minded mindlessness appears to be coming from you.
If you would care to learn from thoughs who actually know and teach the system, give me a call. Otherwise you are just listening to hearsay.
As with any diver who care's to take a class from me and actually put some effort into learning, and doesn't get anything out of it I will refund their total tuition.
Please take this as a friendly offer and not a challenge. Hell, take it as a challenge.
Remember, you don't have to like somebody to dive with them, you just have to trust them.
