Once again this year, C.A.R.E. (California Artificial Reef Enhancement program) has become a major spomnsor/siupporter of Chamber Day with a $1000 donation to the Michael Kane $10K Chamber Challenge. (This is in addition to the 10 spots - a full table - that they're taking for Chamber Evening.)

C.A.R.E. is a group working for the passage of the "Rigs to Reefs" bill which would allow decommissioned oil rigs, rather than being dismantled back down to the sea floor, to remain in place as artificial reefs and thriving marine communities, plus require the oil companies to donate a hefty chunk of the money they save for not having to dismantle to a special marine preservation fund.

The bill this year (last year's version was not acted upon by the Legislature) is SB1 and while there is still some wrangling going on over wording and other issues, there's feeling that the bill has a good shot at passage this year.

You can find out more about C.A.R.E. at "www.calreefs.org" and you can get some more specifics about SB1 and C.A.R.E.'s sister organization CEMR at "www.preservereefs.org". We thank C.A.R.E. very much for their donation and continued recognition of the importance of our Chamber as a vital marine resource.
